Dealing with a disaster, natural or otherwise, can be some of the most difficult work you do as a school administrator. You must enact a timely response, working quickly to provide emotional support as needed, establishing a plan to move forward, and keeping open lines of communication with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Below are suggestions for how your private-independent school can navigate the disaster recovery process, as well as administrative actions and position-specific duties you may want to consider. We hope that you are able to use this advice to get your school up and running as soon as possible, providing a safe haven for your students and a positive place for your community.
In two previous white papers, ISM discussed whether the recent recession and subsequent recovery has impacted private-independent school enrollments. Despite data from ISM's recent parent reenrollment surveys and three tuition elasticity studies (all suggesting that the enrollment intentions of parents remains strong and that tuition and enrollment are not correlated), many school leaders continue to question independent school sustainability. This report focuses on five sustainability concerns that ISM most frequently hears and addresses each in turn. The conclusion is that hysteria over independent school sustainability is not warranted.

Analysis in this report includes univariate summary statistics of each question included in the survey as well as a bivariate and multivariate analysis examining predictors of faculty salary at independent schools.
Released in November 2013. This report, published by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, discusses the results of a survey administered to Georgia parents of K–12 private school scholarship concerning why and how parents select a private school for their children. The top five reasons why parents chose a private school for their children are all related to school climate and classroom management, including “better student discipline” (50.9%), “better learning environment” (50.8%), “smaller class sizes” (48.9%), “improved student safety” (46.8%), and “more individual attention for my child” (39.3%). Surveyed parents were overwhelmingly satisfied with their private school choice, with 98.6 percent of parents being “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with their decision.
Released February 2013. Few topics in education are more controversial than school vouchers. However, this controversy has not curtailed the expansion of voucher program in recent years. In this research report, Hanover Research examines past scholarly studies on the popularity and effects of school voucher programs. After briefly reviewing all current voucher and tax-credit scholarship programs across the country, the report analyzes both the effects of these programs on the participating students and the systemic effects on public school students.
