Released January 2013. This report, the 40th in a series begun in 1964, includes statistics on elementary and secondary schools and postsecondary degree-granting institutions. It provides revisions of projections shown in Projections of Education Statistics to 2020 and projections of enrollment, graduates, teachers, and expenditures to the year 2021. In addition to projections at the national level, the report includes projections of public elementary and secondary school enrollment and public high school graduates to the year 2021 at the state level.
Released December 2012. In this report, Hanover Research examines four aspects of performance-based compensation: pay forperformance systems, evaluating teachers of non-tested subject areas, evaluator training and reliability of evaluation ratings, and student and teacher outcomes. Although the research is based on public school systems, elements may be applicable in a private school setting.
In order to address youth unemployment, two fundamentals need to be in place: skill development and job creation. This report, prepared through research by the McKinsey Center for Government, focuses on skill development, with special attention to the mechanisms that connect education to employment. The authors deeply thank the more than 8,000 education providers, youth, and employers whom they surveyed across nine countries during this research.
Released December 2012. In this report, we describe the results of the 2012 Re-Enrollment Survey, an instrument administered by Hanover Research on behalf of ISM. The survey, which was taken by independent schools throughout the U.S., serves as a follow-up to the National Private School Parent Survey, and is aimed at determining whether the intentions captured in the parent survey matched the “reality for schools.” In this brief, we provide an overview of the survey results and describe (1) the characteristics for survey participants; (2) descriptive statistics of schools’ enrollment, financial aid offerings, and tuition costs for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years; and (3) an analysis of the relationship between re-enrollment rates, financial aid offerings, and tuition increases.
Released December 2012. Monitoring the Future is an annual survey of 8th, 10th, and 12th-graders conducted by the researchers at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, under a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health. Since 1975, the survey has measured drug, alcohol, and cigarette use and related attitudes in 12th-graders nationwide. Eighth and 10th graders were added to the survey in 1991. Overall, 45,449 students from 395 public and private schools participated in the 2012 survey.
Released November 2012. In this report, Hanover Research examines the role of expectations, both those of teachers and of students, on academic outcomes of student learning. The research has examined how expectations should be framed and communicated in order to maximize achievement and drive each student, no matter the caliber of his or her starting point, to achieve beyond where he or she began. This brief report highlights the role that expectations play in student learning, achievement, and goal-setting, with an emphasis on the work of John Hattie and Carol Dweck.
