In his role at ISM, Herb:

• facilitates consultations in areas such as fundraising, capital campaigns, and leadership coaching;
• leads sessions and is a mentor at the Advancement Academy, an annual premier professional development conference from ISM for School Heads, Board members, and development, enrollment management, and marketing communications professionals;
• leads ISM workshops and webinars in his areas of expertise; and
• works one-on-one with Trustees, volunteers, and school employees on all facets of fundraising activities.

Herb has been affiliated with ISM as a faculty member since 2002 and in 2016, he became a full-time Consultant. He is known for his expertise in all areas of development and leadership coaching.

As the Director of Development at Norfolk Academy in Virginia, Herb helped close a $40 million capital campaign to fund endowment and a new performing arts center. Additionally, he guided a $65 million campaign for endowment and campus improvement. He also headed development programs at St. Stephen’s School in Virginia ($10 million), Flint Hill School in Virginia ($2 million), and St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. ($15 million).

Herb directed an advancement program that raised more than $31 million in gifts and pledges at Saint Andrew’s School in Florida.

Herb has presented at 21 national conferences for CASE, NAIS, and NAES and served as Chair of the 37th CASE-NAIS national conference. He was also a member of the panel of judges for the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards for Independent Schools, chairing it for more than six years. Additionally, Herb was a CASE Summer Institute for Independent School Advancement Professionals faculty member for over 11 years.

Herb coached advancement teams that were recognized twice by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in the Achievement in Mobilizing Support Award competition. Herb also received the CASE Steuben Crystal Apple Award for Teaching and CASE Robert Bell Crow Award for philanthropic leadership.

Herb earned the Leader (IAP-L) designation through ISM’s International Advancement Certification Program and is a Certified Fundraising Executive. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and completed graduate work at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
