Waste-Free Lunches
Originally posted on globalstewards.org.

Lunch is one of the most waste-generating periods of the school day—especially if your school doesn’t have a compost and/or recycle program initiated.

A waste-free lunch is defined as one where you’re left with nothing to throw out afterwards. This might not seem possible. Sandwiches need to be wrapped in something, right? And, what about your drink? Did you bring something that requires utensils? The following article from globalstewards.org sheds some light on how wasteful lunches can be, and offers suggestions to making your lunch-footprint smaller.

Five simple ways to pack a waste-free lunch

  • Reusable carrier (cloth bag, lunchbox)
  • Reusable containers
  • Thermos for drinks—warm and cool—or, a reusable drink container (these are popular right now and can be found nearly everywhere).
  • Cloth napkin
  • Utensils that can be washed and reused

Five waste-generating lunchtime favorites

  • Throw-away bags
  • Aluminum and tin cans
  • Juice boxes
  • Plastic utensils, bags, and bottles
  • Styrofoam
