You can find just about anything on YouTube. There is a plethora of educational material that can apply to your classroom, from algebra lessons to science experiments to a video montage of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

While YouTube is a goldmine for supplemental material, it’s also a landmine. YouTube also is loaded with inappropriate material, comments, advertising, and such that you don’t necessarily want to expose your students to.

eSchool News reports that thanks to a new product from M86 Security, your teachers now can safely use YouTube as part of the curriculum. It’s called VuSafe , and allows teachers to build and organize a video library that their students can then access. VuSafe strips out ads, comments, and any outside links. Teachers assign students with passwords to view the library. Best yet, the service is free.

The Conemaugh Township Area School District in Pennsylvania has been testing the system. Ralph Osmolinski, the district’s technology director, says, “M86 Security’s VuSafe allows teachers to preview YouTube videos, organize, and store those videos for their classes for safe viewing. It is the perfect solution for schools to safely integrate videos into the classroom for teaching purposes.”

M86, a global expert in real-time Web and email threat protection, planned to launch VuSafe this month after beta testing in schools. You can read the M86 press release here. Administrators can sign up for the service on the VuSafe Web site, read the FAQs, and learn more about the process.
