There’s no denying it, social media has made a place for itself in today's marketing plans. Facebook is among the leaders, and understanding why people fan Facebook pages can help your school develop its social media strategies.
A new study by ExactTarget and CoTweet reported that 43% of Facebook users surveyed “like” or are fans of at least one brand on Facebook. The report explains that nearly 40% of Facebook users become fans of pages to receive discounts and follow promotions. Voluntary marketing—how wonderful!
However, for the education world, this proposes a challenge. You’re not likely to offer a discount on tuition or your school’s drama production on Facebook. But, don’t fret just yet. The report also revealed that 39% become fans to show their support for a brand to their friends, family, and followers.
Thirty-four percent of Facebook users said they “like” brands to stay informed about upcoming events and company activities. Thirty-three percent said they “like” brands to stay informed about future products. Twenty-five percent said they fan pages to gain access to exclusive content. And 21% said they friend brand pages to learn more about the company. These statistics confirm the impact that school fan pages can have for potential students, alumni, and current families looking to stay current with upcoming events.
These finding are interesting when Twitter and e-marketing is added to the findings. Only 23% of respondents said they follow brands on Twitter, and only 10% say they subscribe to e-mail marketing.
