Before this crazy winter of one blizzard after the other, Consumer Reports surveyed 14,000 subscribers who have experienced lower-back pain but who have not had back surgery. More than half of them reported that the pain severely limited their daily routine for a week or longer, and 88% said it recurred throughout the year.

Of those responding to the survey, the methods they said worked best for them are as follows:

  • 59% were highly satisfied with chiropractic care
  • 55% were highly satisfied with physical therapy
  • 53% were highly satisfied with acupuncture
  • 44% were highly satisfied with a specialist
  • 34% were highly satisfied with the treatment from their primary-care doctor

What does this mean for your school's employees? Simply that the odds of your school's faculty and staff experiencing such aliments are high. And, chances are, they will miss time recovering from injuries.

Ask yourself now while you're reviewing and renewing your school's benefits policy how these statistics effect your school's staff and faculty. Will your employees even be able to take advantage of methods to relieve back pain, or will they have to pay out of pocket, which many people choose not to do? Those not covered under a medical insurance plan most commonly will not pay out of pocket for medical treatment. This elongates the healing process, equating to more missed work time.
