Baltic High School Principal Jim Aisenbrey, in Baltic, South Dakota, says, “I think everybody, including myself, has had a family member or relative or friend who has dealt with cancer. I do think there are more proper ways to bring this plight to the attention of people, and I don’t think this is a proper way.”

Schools, both public and private, with strict dress codes that forbid students from wearing sexually suggestive clothing, claim the bracelets are offensive. Yet, some parents are fighting back against their schools that have banned the bracelets, claiming that the message is doing what it was intended to do—make people talk about breast cancer. On both blog sites and news sites that have reported on this story, the split between supporters of the trendy bands and those offended by the message seems about 50/50, making school decisions difficult. Read what some parents in the San Francisco area are saying about the ban here.

Perhaps with all the student concerns schools are trying to address, the, “I Love Boobies” bracelet controversy seems like a trivial matter. Some have even commented with that very position on sites that have published the story. But, one thing is clear: This year, as you struggle to grasp all the concerns parents have, these popular bracelets may be among the mix.

In the event that you are faced with addressing this concern, take care to appreciate your school’s culture, be sensitive to your parents, and at the same time, don’t lose your sense of humor!
