As Division Head, you need to keep children safe and healthy while getting a stellar education at your facility. Inspiring your faculty to support the children to grow and learn is a top priority, so keeping your students safe while having fun is a never-ending lesson.

Summer is here, and with it comes June Safety Month. All year long, you should strive for these goals, and the National Safety Council is here to help with ideas, tips, and tricks.

The first week in June is the Kickoff, followed by specific categories (Preventing Overexertion; Teen Driving Safety; Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls; and On the Road, Off the Phone) in which to be mindful of, all month long. These articles translate into ways for your faculty to assist the students make happy and safe choices in their daily lives.

The NSC promotes safety and fun, and here are a few ways to keep your students safe and happy:

  • If a student spills his/her drink at lunch or snacktime, clean it up immediately.
  • Remind students to always keep in contact with your faculty. Whether they are out on a field trip or walking down the hall, accidents can happen. Make sure the children know the teachers can be approached with anything, even if they dropped and slid on the cupcake they were supposed to save for lunch. Faculty members don’t have eyes in the back of their heads, so they need to be alerted if a child accidentally hurts himself.
  • Remove tripping hazards (paper, boxes, books, athletic equipment) from stairs, walkways and ramps.
  • While practicing summer sports, always remind your student athletes to apply sunscreen, drink plenty of water, to take frequent breaks, and to stop their activity—especially if they feel dizzy or have a rapid heartbeat. (MSC and ISM’s tip are not a substitute for a doctor’s advice, so please plan accordingly and check with a doctor before engaging the students in any type of sport.)
  • Always keep a first-aid kit, ice packs, and incident reports at each site.
  • Remind students to always wear a seat belt, and to remind their families and loved ones to do so as well.
