  • Create a Twitter account. (It’s simple! Just follow Twitter’s step-by-step registration process.)
  • Create a profile that is unique to you. For example, Head of private school, sports fan, searching for online education resources. Your profile is a way to connect you to similar people and resources.
  • Use Twitter’s search feature. Search for school news, social media, associations, etc.
  • Read the shared articles. They will lead you to resources that may enhance your understanding.
  • Follow people and profiles of interest. These will be updated on your wall so whenever you log in, you’ll be instantly updated with current news.
  • Approve followers who can enrich your mission. Delete spam profiles. You don’t want Sally Vacations following you unless you’re a world traveler and want them in your portfolio of contacts.
  • Make a plan to connect on a weekly basis—and stick with it.
  • Be proactive online. If you follow a tweet to an article that you find positive, leave feedback. Same theory applies with those articles you find to be completely ridiculous. Be professional, and be active.
  • Follow your school’s online policies. If your school has strict social media policies, you’ll want to be mission-appropriate and follow them. If your school does not have online policies, remember your professionalism at all times. Sounding off online can be dangerous—only share online what you would feel comfortable enough communicating to those in the workplace or to parents.
  • Have fun with it.
