Many schools that run international student programs have questions about the correct end-of-year procedures.
They want to make sure they’re taking care of students appropriately, while abiding by established rules and regulations.
If you have questions, you are not alone. Here are three things schools need to know when it comes to international student procedures at the end of the year
The Transfer Out Process
ISM Consultant Jacqui Yamada shares how private-independent schools can help international students transfer from their programs and return home. This includes Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) regulations that your team must follow.
Summer Programs
International students who want to attend a summer program at another U.S. school or college may use their current Form I-20 when joining these programs. They do not need to have separate Form I-20s for each school.
When your international students attend a summer program with another institution, make sure to verify their acceptance and enrollment. Review the program dates to be certain they fall within the required criteria of the current Form I-20.
Since your school is the institution named on both the student's Form I-20 and Visa, it is your responsibility to verify the student’s time in the country, complete with information on ports of entry and departure. Remember, the onus is on your designated school officials to assist all non-immigrant students to properly maintain status.
Students Returning to Your School
International students looking to return to your school in the fall also require some due diligence on your part this summer. Your school's PDSO and DSO staff should verify each student’s status within SEVIS as “active.” They should also update any new student information, such as residential placement and financial changes, including tuition increases or awarded scholarships.
Your staff can further assist students by providing a checklist of required documents for their return, including:
- Passport
- Visa
- Forms I-20, I-94, and I-901
- Acceptance letter on school letterhead
- Verification of funds
- Proof of insurance
- 24/7 contact information for select school staff
Instruct your students to be aware and mindful of their passport and Visa expiration dates. Departure from their home country may be halted if their documentation expires in less than six months from their travel dates. Finally, remind students that documents for re-entry must be accessible for inspection when they enter the country and notwithin checked bags.
