In her role at ISM, Barbara:

• writes for ISM’s flagship advisory letter, Ideas & Perspectives;
• facilitates workshops, including ISM’s Engaging Students in Any Length Period, Transformative Faculty Growth and Evaluation, and Transformative Academic Leadership;
• provides one-on-one leadership coaching to academic administrators;
• facilitates Board and school leadership retreats;
• analyzes and presents school survey data to school leaders;
• presents at national and regional association conferences; and
• drives ISM’s DEIBJ initiatives.

Barbara joined ISM in 2011 after working in education since 1996. Her areas of expertise include employee culture, evaluation, and growth; organizational systems; academic leadership; and student-centered and brain-based pedagogy.

Before her tenure at ISM, Barbara served as an adult literacy teacher at Boston University in Massachusetts; a world language teacher at the MacDuffie School in Massachusetts; and a language teacher and lead advisor at Collegiate School in Virginia. She also served as Department Chair and Academic Dean at Cape Henry Collegiate School in Virginia, where she oversaw curriculum and professional growth in grades PreK−12.

While a student at Shady Side Academy in Pennsylvania, Barbara attended a year of high school in France through School Year Abroad. She later lived and studied in Spain and Brazil, where she learned Spanish and Portuguese.

Barbara holds a bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish from Trinity College in Connecticut; a master’s degree in applied linguistics from Boston University in Massachusetts; a master’s degree in educational administration from Harvard University in Massachusetts; and a master’s degree in independent school leadership from the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York.
