Q: Can you share some information that may help clarify the need for a claim form when it comes to International Student Accident Insurance? We have a student covered by an accident and sickness plan, and he has been asked to submit a claim form for a doctor visit due to an illness.
A: This is a tough question to answer since there are several popular insurance companies offering international student coverage, not to mention smaller insurance shops with acceptable policies. However, regardless of your students’ insurance provider, you should encourage him to always carry his ID card. This way, the doctor’s office can properly file the claim.
Your international student’s coverage should be filed in his/her student record. Since it’s required that students be covered to study abroad, this is completely acceptable documentation to be included in your student files. To be 100% sure of how your student needs to proceed, you can call the provider.
Some schools require that the same provider cover all their international students. This is a great rule to implement if you have a robust exchange program to avoid confusion in the future.
