The holidays bring many of us closer. It’s a time to celebrate, unite, and reflect, regardless of what faith or nationality you are. However, the season isn’t bright for all of us. The season can also force us to face or remember loved ones lost, hard times, and difficult moments. If you find yourself slipping into depression this time of year, here are some techniques that might help you push through the season.

Exercise. You’ll find this tip on nearly self-help Web site you browse. Get up and get your body moving. It releases endorphins that help your mind battle those pesky, downing memories and thoughts. Even if you don’t think you can make it ten minutes down the road to the gym, just by walking around the block you can get those feel good chemicals working.

Talk to a stranger. We’re all headed somewhere for something. If you’re an extrovert but finding yourself feeling lonely this season, recharge with those around you—the strangers standing behind you in line or browsing the same racks as you. Recharge your outgoing nature by extending yourself to someone new if only for a few short seconds.

Retreat for a night. Unlike the extroverts out there, introverts need time to themselves to recharge and feel alive. If you’re introverted, take a break from all the excitement and make a date with yourself. Watch your favorite movie, start that book you’ve planning to read, make yourself your favorite meal—take time for yourself.

Crank up your creativity. Art, like music, is a creative tool used by professionals for years and years to overcome depression and simply release tension. Even if you don’t consider yourself creative, by getting yourself involved in a hands-on, tactile project such as putting together a bookshelf or repairing your basement door can draw out the positive energies.

Get involved in your community. Communities are always looking for volunteers around this time of year. By doing something kind, it can rejuvenate your holiday spirit. Plus, being around others who embracing the holiday spirit is contagious.
