Most Preferred Forms of Recognition at Work
1. Verbal recognition—42%
2. Cash bonuses—19%
3. Additional time off—9%
4. Training or seminars—7%
5. Cards/notes—6%
Notice there aren't any mugs, pens, or t-shirts on this list. Times are changing and traditional rewards for a job well done aren't as well received as they once were. There's a new generation in the workforce—perhaps you're a part of it—and they're looking for different sources of recognition.
Although the economy is in a funk, don't be afraid to communicate with your superior how you prefer to receive feedback. Your school may be one of the unlikely ones that are downsizing, encouraging furloughs, or even decreasing salaries, but if your job hasn't been eliminated, then it's still important to express what fuels you to keep plugging away—you should feel comfortable enough to ask for the intangible aids that inspire you most.
And since we just mentioned it, let's touch base briefly on another insecurity. Yes, the economy is in a recession and it has affected everyone in one way. However, you need to feel secure enough to still come into work every day and do your best. You are there for a reason—there is a job to get done—so try not to worry about the unknown or stress about the possibility of losing your job. Instead focus on the positives—focus on how to give 100%. And ask for what you need to do just that. Don't be afraid to reach out for support and guidance.
Effective managers today know that it's not what they do for you, but what they do with you that matters the most. Keeping an open and clear communication between you and your superior can only be a benefit to you both. Don't shy away from the chance to excel.
