Soccer, baseball, and volleyball, to name just a few, used to be seasonal sports. Now, students can play on teams for nine to 10 months out of the year. The result is more strain on the body and, as research is showing, more instances of injury.
Students are not as aware of the potential dangers of rushing back into the game as adults may be. They need to be made aware of the intensity in which a minor injury can balloon into, and well educated on the proper healing time needed. They need to feel comfortable in being honest about what how their body is feeling with not just themselves, but also with their coaches and parents.
Often they can feel pressured by peers, coaches, and parents to push through their pains for the sake of bringing their team to victory. Yet, again the true extent of their pain is often not clearly communicated to adults because their passion for their sport of choice is so intense. Again, constantly reminding students of the potential dangers of ignoring injuries and making them feel at ease in being honest is important to limit long term implications.
