Last year alone, HSAs grew 25%. Over the last five years, the enrollment in HSAs has been unwavering: as of January 1, 2006, 3.2 million people were enrolled in an HSA; as of January 1, 2007, 4.5 million; January 1, 2008, 6.1 million; and January 1, 2009, 8 million. Driving HSAs growth is lower premiums for high-deductible health care plans than traditional plans. This year, the minimum deductible for single coverage through an HSA-linked health insurance plan is $1,200. The minimum deductible for family coverage is $2,400.
This growth is not solely representative of the large corporations, either. HSA enrollment has risen in all markets according to the Washington-based America's Health Insurance Plans. Of course, the large-employer market (51 employees +) has the largest percent gain—about 33%. However, in the small-employer market (up to 50 employees), enrollment rose 22%, and in the individual market (self-employed) enrollment increased 12%.
