Academic Leadership//

December 10, 2009

It used to be a sure thing—once you're accepted, you're in. However, the fact is that colleges, like airlines, are now overbooking, and for much the same reason. There are seats to be filled and, in the current economy, it's just not clear how many people are going to actually show up at the gate.

Colleges are checking both accepted and wait-listed students in the areas of grades, course completion, absenteeism, and discipline problems. The danger signs of senioritis include:

  • A significantly lower grade in one or more courses
  • A decline in overall GPA
  • Dropped academic courses
  • Abandoning extracurricular activities, such as a sports team or music lessons
  • Disciplinary action for behavioral issues
  • Academic misconduct, including cheating or plagiarism
  • Increased absences or tardiness
  • Suspension for drug or alcohol use
