When it comes to the annual fund campaign, it is essential that Trustees not only set a strong example, but that they lead by example. As donors, their participation level must be 100%. They are viewed as “insiders” by your school’s constituent groups—if they don’t provide enthusiastic support, why should anyone else?
Their role is to kick off the campaign in style and ensure that it runs smoothly. Board members show support in four key and critical ways.
- Board members are lead givers. They are the first solicited and the first to donate. They demonstrate by their actions that they value this fund-raising effort and personally support the drive and its goals.
- Board members give to the greatest of their ability. Each is expected to contribute at the “ouch level,” whatever it may be for that individual. A Trustee may be involved with a number of charitable groups, but your school should always be in the top three.
- Board members contribute time as well as treasure. They help identify potential donors. They assist with recruitment and training of volunteers. They also play a role as solicitors, particularly in the face-to-face effort, where their prestige, their close involvement with the school, and their proven giving record encourage others to make substantial contributions.
- Board members ensure that essential resources are available. A successful campaign requires people power, up-to-date information on past and potential donors, and a variety of equipment and materials—from computers and telephones to a promotional brochure and annual report. The Board’s Development Committee, directly or indirectly, makes sure that the campaign has the support it needs.
