Don't use salt on your walkways. Salt stops working at 15 degrees above zero. If you're experiencing a winter much like the one we are, then you're aware of the flaws in traditional salt-based de-icers. Use products made from magnesium chloride instead. These will work in temperatures as low as minus 17 degrees, and they're less damaging to concrete, cars, and surrounding plants.

To create traction on walkways, try using organic cat litter. Although it's not the most attractive choice, it's great for heavy traffic areas and will help to lower potential slips and falls. Sand is also a great alternative.

If you're looking to replace snow removal equipment this season, look into electric-powered products. Not only are electric-powered tools cleaner and healthier for the environment, they may also save your school a few dollars.
