Architecture of Teacher Professional Growth
Most schools believe in teacher professional growth. Far fewer have built a coherent system to support it. Professional development budgets are unevenly distributed, coaching relationships are informal or inconsistent, and growth goals set in September often fade by November. Teachers, especially experienced ones, can go years without meaningful, structured encouragement to improve their practice. The result is a faculty that hears “we invest in you,” but rarely experiences it.
In this webinar, ISM Adjunct Consultant Mikel Gwaltney moves beyond the principle of teacher growth to its architecture. Drawing on ISM research and practice, he explores what a well-designed professional growth cycle actually looks like — and how it differs from evaluation. Participants will examine how schools finance and distribute development opportunities fairly, how coaching relationships should function, and where teachers most need structured support today. You will leave with a clear picture of what effective professional growth systems look like, and a practical framework for building one in your school.
