Is the U.S. Private Education Sector Infected by Baumol’s Cost Disease?

High and rising costs characterize the private education industry in the United States. This paper tests if Baumol’s cost disease of the service sector can explain some of the growth of private education spending. An empirical strategy developed by Hartwig (2008) and Colombier (2010) and a panel data set of all U.S. states over the period from 1980 to 2009 are used in the empirical analysis. The results indicate that Baumol’s cost disease does infect the private education industry in the United States.

Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2020

Establishing reliable indicators of the current state of school crime and safety across the nation and regularly updating and monitoring these indicators are important in ensuring the safety of our nation’s students. This is the aim of Indicators of School Crime and Safety. Although much of this report is based on research in public schools, many of the findings are relevant to private schools where providing a "safe haven" for students is of utmost importance.

The Handbook for Campus Safety and Security Reporting

Developed by the U.S. Department of Education for postsecondary institutions, much of the information in these guidelines are applicable in private-independent schools and their campuses. You can tailor many of your policies and procedures based on the handbook's reporting recommendations on disciplinary actions, security measures, and safety issues.

Expenditures on Children by Families

Since 1960, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided estimates on family spending on children (from birth through age 17). This report's statistics offer a general sense of what your families may be spending on their children, but should not be used to determine tuition levels or as an argument to reduce tuition. Keep in mind, the government uses the results of this research to develop child-support guidelines, foster-care payments, and family educational programs. The national averages may not reflect the spending levels of your school's parents.

Building and Maintaining Cash Reserves

The number one marker in the second-tier of the ISM Stability Markers® is cash reserves, and it has been continually ranked in the top two of correlates for a school’s long-term sustainability over a period of decades. The technical definition for ISM’s Stability Marker for “cash reserves” is actually a formulaic mix of cash reserves, debt, and endowment. A school’s high score on this means there is excess cash, at levels of 25% /or more of the total operating budget, and low (or no) debt.
